Anaklia - town and health resort (region of Samegrelo - Zemo Svaneti). The town is located near the Inguri River, 30 meters above sea level. In the town are preserved the ruins of the fortress of 1073. In 2006, the Ministry of Culture of Georgia conducted a restoration.
At the place, where the Georgians were taken into slavery by the Ottoman Empire, Georgian church was built. According to local legend, child of a single mother from a village named Anna was kidnapped. After hearing the cry of a woman people said: “Anna rkians” (Translated from Megrelian, Anna cries). Because of this, the village was named Anakria, which means “crying.” Later, the letter «r» was transformed into «l», which gave the city it’s present name.
